The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed plans to initiate the recall of Parliament on Wednesday, October 23. This comes after concerns about Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to indefinitely adjourn parliamentary sessions.
In an interview, Afenyo-Markin, who is also the MP for Effutu, expressed displeasure with the Speaker’s actions. He suggested that the move is part of a broader strategy by National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to disrupt parliamentary business and harm Ghana’s economic progress.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is determined to resist these tactics and ensure that government operations continue smoothly despite the opposition’s alleged plans. The Majority Leader also highlighted that a court ruling required the Speaker to act, but he believes Bagbin has been stalling on the matter.
Speaker Bagbin had adjourned parliamentary proceedings indefinitely on October 22 following a dispute over which party should sit on the Majority side of the chamber. He claimed that his decision was made after consulting with parliamentary leadership, a claim Afenyo-Markin contested.
Afenyo-Markin also mentioned a seating dispute, noting that the Clerk of Parliament had not altered the seating arrangements, despite claims from the Speaker. The Majority Leader suggested that Speaker Bagbin appears influenced by the Minority, behaving in a manner that seems hesitant or fearful when they voice their concerns.
