On October 17, 2024, the Ghanaian Parliament’s Majority Caucus staged a dramatic walkout in protest at Speaker Alban Bagbin’s adoption of a motion that vacated four parliamentary seats.
The Speaker’s audacious decision has caused friction, as the Majority Caucus has voiced their displeasure.
Under the direction of Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted a walkout from the chamber in protest of the decision.
Following the Speaker of Parliament’s decision, the Majority Leader argued with him before leaving the chamber.
Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu filed the motion, arguing that the MPs should give up their parliamentary seats in accordance with the constitutional regulations governing parliamentary membership in order to run as independent candidates in the next elections in December.
Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) are the MPs impacted by this decision.
The motion draws attention to the notion that these MPs have essentially surrendered their party connections and vacated their seats in Parliament by declaring their intention to run as independents.
