Manchester United’s victory over Brentford eases Ten Hag’s pressure.

Manchester United mounted a spirited comeback to claim a vital 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford, alleviating some of the mounting pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Brentford took a first-half lead through Ethan Pinnock’s injury-time header, a controversial goal as United’s Matthijs de Ligt was off the field receiving treatment for a head injury. This left United trailing at halftime, extending their Premier League goal drought to 316 minutes.

However, United responded quickly after the break. Alejandro Garnacho ended their dry spell with a stunning first-time finish from Marcus Rashford’s cross, leveling the score early in the second half. The decisive moment came in the 62nd minute when striker Rasmus Højlund latched onto a brilliant flicked pass from Bruno Fernandes. With ice-cold composure, Højlund chipped the ball over Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, securing a crucial lead for the hosts.

While it lacked the last-minute drama of the previous season—when Scott McTominay’s injury-time brace crushed Brentford’s hopes of a rare Old Trafford victory—this win was just as significant for Ten Hag. Starting the game in 14th place, anything less than a win would have intensified scrutiny on the Dutchman, who had recently dismissed media speculation about his job as “fairytales and lies.” The victory provides some relief ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Fenerbahce on Thursday.
