The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has delayed marking the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts because of debt owed to WAEC, according to information disclosed by the Minority in Parliament. Ranking Member of the Education Committee Peter Nortsu-Kotoe explained the postponement’s financial situation at a press briefing yesterday, citing the government’s debt to the test board as the cause.
The government owing the examination organisation GH₵300 million as of June for services rendered between 2022 and this year. He insisted that this debt be paid off by the government right away. He claims that the academic calendar will be disrupted if the scripts are not marked on time.
Recall that until the government provided a portion of the funds a few weeks prior to the exam, the exams themselves nearly suffered from the government’s debt to WAEC.
