The Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP) has been launched and put in place for the enhancement of journalists in Ghana through capacity building, and the third cohort of the MCEP has been launched officially by the information minister Fatimatu Abubakar and the working committee. It was held at the Ministry of Information’s Press Centre and gave very crucial signals about the place and importance media professionals well-trained to support the ongoing democratization processes in Ghana.
Ms. Abubakar stressed the Ministry’s vision behind the creation of the MCEP as one tool in the larger picture of the Ministry’s support for more effective participation of Civil Society in the development processes in the country. Speaking words about the programme’s performance, she noted that previous cohorts have already reached one hundred journalists. The first one was in Kumasi in January this year with participants being 58, the second one was conducted in Accra in December this year, at the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UNIMAC) with 42 Journalists involving in critical journalism training.
This is the view of Gloria Hiadzi, the Chairperson of the Working Committee and the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), who foregrounded the challenges that would arise from the elections. This year’s programme will take place from September 10 to 13 and 40 Journalists will be physically present while 60 of them will be online from UNIMAC, Dzorwulu Campus.
Ms. Abubakar also urged the many media practitioners as well as media houses to apply for the programme to enhance high participation. Members of the MCEP Working Committee and several third parties such as GIBA, board members from NMC, representatives from the GJA, New Media Association of Ghana, Women in Broadcasting, Alliance for Women in Media Africa, and the Ministry of Information Press Corps also graced the occasion.
