As per Kathleen Addy, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), criticising the media or journalists is not something that a democratic nation should tolerate. She says that as the media is the main source of information about democracy, any sustained attacks on it are a sign that democracy is in danger. At JoyNew’s nationwide discussion on ‘Defending Media Freedom’ on August 29, she stated, “Violence, regardless of the situation, cannot be the solution for us.
Violence against the media should never become normalised, according to Madam Addy, since this would put everyone in the nation in danger. She urged all parties involved to take action against those who perpetrate such crimes, failing which conferences would be held in Ghana as long as social problems remained.
The NCCE chief further demanded that everyone pitch in to prevent false and misleading information. She warned people ahead of the polls that people would become irate if they felt their results were unfair, but she also pleaded with them to keep in mind that this time, there should be no bloodshed. There is no one worth it. No political godfather, godmother, or party is worth dying for, much less spilling blood for.
