Advocates for the immediate repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, Mining L.I., which allows mining activities in forest reserves, include Awula Serwaa, Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens. The environmentalist contends that any prospective advantages are greatly outweighed by the irrevocable harm that these practices produce.
Her request is in response to rumors that a miner who has not yet been identified had intruded into the Draw River Forest Reserve, which is one of Ghana’s most important protected areas and is situated near Gwira Banso in the Nzema East District of the Western Region. Excavators have reportedly been brought to the site and a portion of the forest has been destroyed, suggesting the possible beginning of illicit mining operations that might seriously degrade the forest.
Madam Serwaa expressed disapproval over the granting of mining permits in regions with noteworthy biodiversity. She wondered why these kinds of choices were made. She also voiced her disgust with political parties, pointing out that, in the run-up to the general elections in December, they had neglected to address this subject in their manifestos. Since Madam Serwaa believes that the mining L.I. 2462 is allowing environmental degradation in Ghana’s forest reserves, she has challenged all political parties to pledge to abolish the law.
