Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has reaffirmed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus’s determination to defend their majority status despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that temporarily halts a decision by Speaker Alban Bagbin. The controversy began when Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant, affecting MPs who intend to run as independent candidates in the 2024 elections.
This decision would have given the NDC a slight edge in parliamentary numbers, shifting the balance of power. However, the Supreme Court ruled to stay the execution of Bagbin’s declaration, maintaining the current numbers in Parliament. At a press conference, Dr. Forson made it clear that his caucus would “jealously guard” what they see as their rightful majority and criticized the Court’s intervention in what he considers a parliamentary matter.
He emphasized the significance of maintaining the NDC’s position in Parliament and vowed not to retreat in their pursuit of fair representation. Dr. Forson also expressed concerns over the judiciary’s involvement in parliamentary affairs, highlighting the delicate balance between branches of government.
