Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has shared a touching story about how his compatriot, Mohammed Gago, played a pivotal role in securing his first professional contract with Italian Serie A club Udinese Calcio.
Speaking at the Emy Africa Awards in Accra, where he was honored for his contributions to football, Appiah reflected on Gago’s selfless gesture during a friendly match against Austrian side Sturm Graz.
Appiah, who had recently joined Udinese’s youth team from Accra Hearts of Oak, was yet to finalize his contract with the Italian club. During the match, Gago faked an injury in the 80th minute, creating an opportunity for the young midfielder to step onto the field.
Grabbing the chance with both hands, Appiah delivered a stunning 25-yard goal that instantly captured the attention of Udinese’s management and the Italian media
In his speech, Appiah expressed deep gratitude for Gago’s selflessness, crediting the moment as a turning point in his career.
“Gago Mohammed is the one who made everything possible for me,” Appiah said. “I was just a young guy from Chorkor trying to adjust to life in Italy—new weather, new cuisine, everything. During that friendly, Gago pretended to be injured so I could get a chance to play. I went in, scored a goal from 25 yards, and the next day my name was in the newspapers.”
Appiah recalled how Gago later revealed that the coach had been instructed to secure his contract, paving the way for him to sign his first international deal just two days later.
Both Appiah and Gago went on to represent Udinese, showcasing their talents on the European stage. Appiah’s illustrious career later included stints at top clubs such as Juventus, Brescia, and Fenerbahçe. He also captained Ghana during its historic first appearances at the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2010, solidifying his legacy as one of Africa’s football greats.
Reflecting on his journey, Appiah praised the people and moments that shaped his career, particularly the crucial role played by Gago. “Every time I see him, I bow, because I appreciate what he has done for me,” he said.
This story not only highlights Appiah’s gratitude but also underscores the camaraderie and sacrifices that often go unnoticed in football.
