Ghana Reports First Monkeypox Case in Bia West District, Urges Public Vigilance

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a case of monkeypox in the Bia West District of the Western North Region. The patient, a 15-year-old boy, sought medical attention on September 25 at a district government hospital after experiencing symptoms including fever, body aches, sore throat, and a rash on his palms and face.

In a public health advisory released on Thursday, October 3, the GHS revealed that 230 suspected monkeypox cases have been reported across 88 districts nationwide. The agency is urging the public to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols to prevent further transmission of the virus.

Health officials have identified 25 individuals who had close contact with the patient and are currently monitoring them to mitigate the risk of potential outbreaks in the region. The GHS has initiated a public health investigation into the confirmed case and is working to trace and manage the suspected cases. They will also notify the World Health Organization (WHO) in accordance with global health response protocols.

To help control the spread of the virus, the GHS emphasizes the importance of public cooperation with health guidelines, including maintaining proper hygiene and promptly reporting symptoms such as fever and rash.
