Peter Kwakye-Ackah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has officially withdrawn his independent bid for re-election in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
In a statement, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah attributed his decision to the recent ruling by the Sekondi High Court, which cleared the NDC’s candidate, Joana Cudjoe, to contest the December 7 elections.
“With just 18 days to the election, contesting as an independent candidate is no longer a viable option,” he stated. He expressed gratitude to party elders and leaders for their advice, which guided his decision in the broader interest of the NDC.
This announcement comes shortly after another independent candidate, Dr. Karl Mark Arhin, stepped down from the race to throw his support behind Madam Cudjoe. Speaking at a rally in Kyeikrom on November 16 alongside NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Dr. Arhin explained that his independent candidacy was a temporary strategy to ensure the NDC’s participation amid earlier legal uncertainties surrounding Cudjoe’s candidacy.
It remains unclear whether Mr. Kwakye-Ackah will follow suit and endorse Joana Cudjoe as the party’s official candidate for the constituency.
