Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa Challenges National Cathedral Secretariat to Release Audit Report

North Tongu lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on the National Cathedral Secretariat to publish the audit report it claims revealed no adverse findings against the project. He criticized the Secretariat for providing its own interpretation of the report, suggesting that such interpretations should be taken with skepticism. Ablakwa also disclosed that a total of $58.1 million has been invested in the National Cathedral project, excluding $3.5 million in global donations.

The Secretariat previously stated that international accounting and auditing firm Deloitte found no adverse findings during their audit of the National Cathedral project for the year ending 2020. They noted that “proper books of accounts have been kept and the information and explanation provided are in accordance with the Companies Act, 2019 (922).”

This information was included in a statement issued by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyina, Chairman of the National Cathedral Board, following a meeting with church leaders on September 20. The Board expressed concern over the lengthy audit process, which officially began in July 2023, but acknowledged the thoroughness of Deloitte’s audit procedures, which included extensive verification related to funds received and expenditures.

Ablakwa has previously leveled allegations of financial impropriety against the project and has stated that certain individuals could face charges for causing financial loss to the state in relation to the project. However, Prof. Onyina’s statement emphasized that the auditors were clear in their assessment, asserting there were no adverse findings and that all accounting practices adhered to legal requirements.
