Samira Bawumia launches National Child Online Protection Framework
On Friday, Second Lady Samira Bawumia launched the National Child Online Protection Framework in Accra to safeguard children from cybersecurity threats like cyberbullying and online abuse. This framework aligns with initiatives from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and UNICEF, aiming to create a safe and empowering online environment for kids in Ghana.
The launch took place during the grand finale of the 2024 National Cybersecurity Challenge at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, under the theme “Empowering Young Minds: Creating Opportunities, Promoting a Safer Digital Ghana.” St. Peters Senior High School was crowned the winner of the contest, organized by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in partnership with the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation, UNICEF, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Citing a Microsoft Global Online Safety Survey, Samira Bawumia noted that 49% of teenagers worldwide have faced serious negative online experiences, emphasizing the need for the online protection framework. She stated, “This framework provides a comprehensive approach to online safety, addressing the unique challenges our children encounter in the digital world.”
She called for stronger collaboration among key stakeholders to tackle these cybersecurity threats.
Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako, Director General of the CSA, welcomed the framework, saying it would help the CSA implement effective measures to protect Ghanaian children’s digital lives. He also mentioned that regulations for child online protection are expected to be finalized by the end of the year to support the CSA’s mission under the Cybersecurity Act of 2020. Additionally, he highlighted that a National Steering Committee is being established to provide strategic direction for the Cybersecurity Challenge, ensuring a more organized selection process for participating schools.
