The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has praised Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for his handling of Tuesday’s parliamentary proceedings, describing his leadership as a “masterclass.” In a statement released by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on October 22, 2024, the party commended Bagbin’s mature leadership and his commitment to conducting Parliament’s affairs in the best interests of both the institution and the Ghanaian people.
The NDC emphasized that Speaker Bagbin’s leadership has strengthened the integrity of Parliament, expressing confidence that he will continue to uphold the independence of the legislative process.
This commendation follows Bagbin’s decision to adjourn the parliamentary session amidst a heated dispute over vacant seats. On October 22, the NPP MPs had walked out of the session due to a disagreement with the NDC, who had occupied the Majority side of the chamber.
Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the NDC MPs’ presence and noted that while there were enough members to conduct business, the numbers were insufficient for decision-making. He also aligned with Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu’s statement that, after the NPP’s walkout on Thursday, they were indeed the Minority.
The NDC party also commended its caucus for their steadfastness during the challenges, describing their actions as a symbol of their determination to resist oppression and uphold the democratic will of the people. The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to democracy and the pursuit of a brighter future for all Ghanaians.
