In anticipation of the December 7 elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party’s National Chairman, has outlined a number of requirements that must be fulfilled before the party will consider signing the Peace Pact recommended by the National Peace Council. Mr. Nketia voiced doubts about the efficacy of previous Peace Pacts, emphasizing that they had failed to provide the desired results. He specifically brought up the 2020 elections, in which it was claimed that national security agents had assassinated eight NDC members without being held accountable.
At the NDC headquarters on August 20, Mr. Nketia went over the requirements for the NDC to join the Peace Pact in detail with the National Peace Council. The NDC is insisting on the full implementation of the recommendations made by the investigation into the violence that occurred during the by-election in Ayawaso West Wuogon. In keeping with their emphasis on justice and prevention, they also want those accountable for the violence during the previous election to face legal consequences.
The party demands that those responsible for the anomalies in vote paper printing be held accountable and that concrete steps be done to ensure that they don’t occur again. In addition, they are demanding a comprehensive probe into the disappearance of IT equipment from the Electoral Commission’s (EC) storage, raising doubts about the impartiality of the EC’s employees and the reliability of its systems.
In addition, the NDC is pushing the President to declare in the open that he will honor the outcomes of the 2024 elections. Finally, the party maintains that before they will sign the Peace Pact, important people including the Attorney General, Chief Justice, Inspector General of Police, and National Security Coordinator must sign it.
