NIA to pilot registration of Ghanaians in Abroad: -Ghana Card

According to the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) Executive Secretary, his organization is prepared to register Ghanaians residing abroad.

The exercise complies with Act 750 of the NIA Act, 2008.

Prof. Ken Attafuah reports that a team of ten will go to Ottawa, Canada to start the exercise’s pilot program and teach local officials to handle registration.

With the assistance of their officers, the team will rely on Ghana’s diplomatic posts overseas to serve as registration centers.

Since last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NIA have collaborated to create a plan for the registration of Ghanaians residing outside while Mobile Registration Workstations (MRW) will be sent to Ghana’s foreign missions, mission staff has received training on the registration procedure.

During a Monday, August 26, 2024, public hearing before the Assurances Committee of Parliament, Prof. Attafuah mentioned that part of the pilot exercise will involve public awareness campaigns.

The 10-member team will undertake similar exercises in Toronto, Washington and New Jersey.

The members are anticipated to depart the nation around the weekend of August 26, 2024, all other things being equal.

The NIA is required by the National Identification Authority Act, 2008 (Act 750) to register Ghanaian residents who reside in or outside of Ghana on the National Identification Register.
