Aggrieved NIA workers declare strike over delayed implementation of Service Scheme

The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) at the National Identification Authority (NIA), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana, has declared an indefinite strike starting today, October 7.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 6, the union members expressed their frustration with the NIA’s failure to implement a newly approved Scheme of Service (SoS), which they say is vital to their professional welfare and development.

“Despite our patience and numerous appeals, the employer’s refusal to operationalize the newly approved Scheme of Service has forced us to take this difficult decision. From Monday, October 7, 2024, none of our members will be reporting to work until the scheme is fully implemented,” the statement read.

The workers emphasized that the SoS, which received swift approval from the Public Services Commission (PSC) back in March, is fundamental to their job security and growth. They see the delay in implementing it as a breach of trust.

“This Scheme of Service was approved by the PSC in just two weeks, reflecting its importance. The management’s refusal to implement it is not only disappointing but also a direct attack on the well-being of NIA staff,” the union stressed.

The workers have vowed to continue their industrial action until the SoS is fully operationalized, underscoring the importance of this step in securing their future within the organization.
