Nigeria, Germany signs €40m waste plants, trucks deal

The Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), through its subsidiary Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, has achieved a significant milestone by securing an export agreement with Germany’s FIMA Industries GmbH and Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH. This strategic deal, backed by financing from Euler Hermes (Germany’s export credit agency) and Oddo BHF Bank, was signed in Lagos, Nigeria, on October 7.

This partnership represents a major advancement in waste management, combining Zoomlion’s expertise in collection and processing with FIMA’s state-of-the-art technology. The collaboration is expected to transform waste management practices across Africa by promoting sustainability and environmental conservation through the export of cutting-edge waste management services and equipment.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Haider Said, Executive Director of Environment and Sanitation at Zoomlion Nigeria, and Habiba Abubakar, the Country Director, represented Jospong Group, while Markus Maierhofer, CEO of FIMA Industries, signed on behalf of his company. Senior officials from both Germany and Lagos State also attended the event.

Haider Said highlighted the project’s origins, tracing the success of similar partnerships in Ghana, and stated that three new waste treatment plants will be established in Lagos State as part of this initiative. The project, valued at around 40 million euros, is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons annually, as the Jospong Group plans to invest about $200 million in Lagos over the next two years.

“This agreement marks a major step toward environmental preservation and waste management efficiency in Nigeria,” Mr. Said noted.

FIMA Industries CEO, Markus Maierhofer, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the project, describing it as a game-changer for waste management in Lagos. The new waste treatment plants will recycle compost and ensure proper waste disposal across the state, furthering efforts to create a cleaner, healthier environment.

“With biological waste treatment systems, we will significantly reduce waste across Lagos State, and we’re ready to invest 10 million euros in this initiative,” Maierhofer explained.

Lucas Doerr, Head of Business Development Export at FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH, elaborated on the process, explaining that waste collectors will gather refuse and transport it to transfer stations, from where it will be sent to solid waste recycling plants and ultimately to engineered landfill sites for safe disposal. He praised the partnership as a stepping stone for future advancements in waste management, thanking the Lagos State Government for its critical support.

This agreement is expected to pave the way for more sustainable waste management solutions, with further projects on the horizon for Zoomlion and its partners.
