The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has announced the suspension of its strike action in compliance with a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC). This directive was issued on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, ordering the union to halt its industrial action immediately.
The NLC’s intervention followed a meeting where both the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and PSWU addressed the ongoing labor dispute. The NLC had convened a session with government representatives, including those from the FWSC, the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions (MELRP), and the Ministry of Finance, alongside PSWU representatives, to mediate the conflict.
Earlier, on October 14, 2024, the PSWU had issued a warning of impending industrial action set to begin on October 21, 2024, due to demands for two specific allowances for its members. In a statement, PSWU General Secretary Bernard Adjei explained that the decision to suspend the strike was made after discussions with the NLC, which indicated that negotiations for better working conditions could only proceed once the strike was called off.
Adjei confirmed that union members are expected to return to work on Monday, October 28, with negotiations with the FWSC scheduled to resume next week. He also underscored the need for institutions to recognize that actions carry consequences.
