The National Labour Commission (NLC) has called on the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the TUC to appear before it following the union’s announcement of an impending strike.
In a statement, the NLC urged TEWU to halt its planned strike and return to the negotiation table to resolve outstanding issues. TEWU had declared its intention to go on strike starting Monday, November 18, 2024, citing delays in finalizing and implementing the Conditions of Service agreements for workers in the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.
While the NLC acknowledged the notification of the strike, it reminded the union of the legal requirements under Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which sets out the procedures for initiating strike action.
The NLC has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, with TEWU and relevant stakeholders to work towards a resolution. Additionally, the Commission has instructed employers, including the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), to submit a detailed status report on the issues at dispute by the close of business on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
