Electoral Commission Receives Nominations from 24 Candidates for 2024 Presidential Election

On Monday, September 9, 2024, the headquarters of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) was a hive of activity as the commission began accepting nominations for the 2024 presidential election. Out of 39 aspirants who collected nomination forms, 24 candidates successfully submitted their papers by the deadline on Friday, September 13, 2024. The nominees include a mix of political party candidates and independent aspirants, with three women among them.

Independent Candidates:
Notable independent candidates who filed their nominations include Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Samuel Apea-Danquah, George Twum Barima Adu, Nana Kwame Bediako (known as Cheddar), and Desmond Abrefah. Other independents include Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, Nii Amu Darko, and Kofi Koranteng.

Political Party Candidates:
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the first from the political parties to file his nomination, accompanied by party officials. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) also submitted the nomination of their flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, on the same day. Other political party candidates include Dr. Hassan Ayariga (All People’s Congress), Bernard Mornah (People’s National Convention), Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana), and Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr (Great Consolidated People’s Party).

Additionally, Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews (Ghana Union Movement), Kofi Asamoah Siaw (Progressive People’s Party), and Mohammed Frimpong (National Democratic Party) have also filed their nominations. The three female candidates are Akua Donkor (Ghana Freedom Party), Janet Nabla (People’s National Party), and Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah.

The successful filing of nominations is a key milestone in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. The EC has promised a thorough review of all submitted nomination forms to ensure a transparent electoral process.
