U.S. And Ghana Nuclear Firms Sign Landmark Commercial Deal For Small Modular Reactor Project In Ghana

A major milestone in the civil nuclear cooperation between the United States and Ghanaian nuclear industries was marked at the U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit in Nairobi by Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins, U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Assistant Secretary Aleshia Duncan, Ghana Deputy Minister of Energy Collins Adomako-Mensah, and Chief Director of the Ghana Ministry of Energy Wilhelmina Asamoah. This milestone was the signing of a commercial agreement between Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) and Regnum Technology Group, the U.S. developer for a small modular reactor (SMR) project using NuScale Power technology.

This business deal between NPG and Regnum is evidence of both countries’ dedication to promoting clean and sustainable energy solutions and marks a significant step forward in cooperation between the civil nuclear industries of the United States and Ghana. It is expected that Ghana’s attempts to improve its energy infrastructure and set the standard for SMR deployments in the area will be anchored by the SMR project. By lowering greenhouse gas emissions and assisting Ghana in meeting its energy targets, this program will set the standard for other energy initiatives in the area.

The NPG-Regnum agreement expands on the civil nuclear collaboration between the United States and Ghana that already exists, particularly under the U.S. Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) Program, which is assisting Ghana in becoming a center of excellence and regional hub for SMR.

The FIRST Program is offering a NuScale Energy Exploration (E2) Center SMR control room simulator to serve as a regional training center for nuclear power technicians and operators in addition to technical training, advisory services, and study tours. It is also establishing a welding certification program to support jobs and supply chain development for the region.

Ghana will be in a position to create a trained nuclear workforce compliant with the highest international standards of nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation thanks to this focused workforce development initiative. The United States is dedicated to assisting partners worldwide in achieving energy security and driving global decarbonization initiatives through the creative use of clean nuclear energy.
