The Democracy Hub, organizers of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, have reaffirmed their intention to hold a three-day protest at Revolutionary Square, despite objections from the Ghana Police Service. While the police Objections is on the fact that the protest has not been officially stopped, they expressed concerns about the chosen location in front of Jubilee House.
In a statement released on September 20 following discussions with the police, the Democracy Hub questioned the police’s decision to secure an ex parte injunction without allowing the group to respond. They requested a copy of the affidavit supporting the injunction, but the police declined to provide it.
The group also sought the police’s security assessment that justified restrictions on the protest, but this information was not shared either. The police suggested alternative protest locations, including Kawukudi Park and Efua Sutherland Park, but the Democracy Hub found these sites impractical and potentially unsafe for public safety and essential services.
In response, the Democracy Hub proposed alternative sites such as the 37 Roundabout, Airport Roundabout, and Ako-Adjei Interchange, but these suggestions were rejected by the police. The Democracy Hub plans to hold a press conference at the Freedom Center in Kokomlemle to update the public on logistical arrangements for the demonstration.
