The Okada Riders Association’s leadership is seeking for a modification to the Legislative Instrument that criminalizes their commercial activity.
Motorcycle related road accidents account for 1. 4% of total accidental casualties in the first half of the year 2024.
In Section 128 (1), (2) and (3) of Road Traffic Regulations 2012 LI 2180, prohibits the use of a motorcycle or tricycle also referred to as ‘Okada’ for commercial purpose.
The police’s attempting to enforce traffic restrictions have garnered few results, triggering occasional crackdowns on commercial motorcyclists. Members of the Okada Riders Association believe the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority should be accountable for the road accidents since it issues licenses to riders without the necessary training.
They believe that teaching and certifying motorcyclists before giving them a license will significantly minimize road incidents.
To better improve its advocacy, the Association is embarking a nationwide data gathering initiative among its members. The two-month exercise has been divided into zones, and the information gathered will be fed into a centralized database.
To cope with members who flagrantly disregard traffic laws, the Association has in the interim established a disciplinary body to deal with them.
The Okada business alone is estimated to be directly generating income for over eight hundred thousand youth in Ghana.
