Parliament relocates to Accra International Conference Centre until chamber renovation is complete

Members of Parliament will relocate to the dome of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) for the House’s recall on September 3, 2024, since renovations to Parliament House’s main chamber are still proceeding. This is in accordance with the 1992 Constitution’s Article 112(3). At a cost of €2.26 million, the House’s main chamber is being renovated to improve the conference system and electronic equipment.

In order to address important government business, the Majority Caucus recently called for a recall of the House, and the Speaker is required by the Constitution to grant their request. To make room for an upgrade to the conference system, all of the chairs and equipment in the chamber have been removed. Additionally, the outdated cables—which have been in use since 2014—are being replaced in the process.

To implement a biometric feature that will enable MPs to electronically register their presence, all of the underlying cables are being replaced. The new system would allow electronic voting utilizing the biometric technology, and it is rumored to be the first in the subregion. The outdated “table top” system will be replaced with a new one that fits inside the table and has a 15-inch laptop-style screen.

MPs may access all parliamentary documents, committee reports, order papers, votes and proceedings, and more with its built-in microphone and touch screen. All reports would be able to be uploaded onto the new system by the Table Office and other Parliament officers.

Cameras will be installed as part of the new features, and a cable will be run from the control room into the video production system so that journalists may access their feeds. An indigenous Ghanaian company called African Bagg Limited is working on the project. Before the end of October, the company is supposed to have the space ready for the third meeting to start.
