Parliament to Reconvene on November 7

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called for Parliament to reconvene on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM. This special session will take place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, where lawmakers are set to address pressing legislative matters that have been stalled for several weeks.

This decision follows a protracted standoff that arose after Speaker Bagbin declared the seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West vacant. The Majority caucus reacted strongly, arguing that this declaration jeopardized their representation and disrupted parliamentary balance.

The impasse took a significant turn when the Supreme Court intervened, issuing a stay on the Speaker’s decision after Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a writ to contest the ruling. This court order temporarily reinstated the disputed seats and underscored the ongoing power struggle between the Majority and Minority factions in Parliament.

Further escalating the situation, the Speaker adjourned the session after the Minority caucus symbolically took over the Majority’s seats in Parliament, leveraging the Speaker’s declaration to their advantage. This unprecedented move by the Minority heightened concerns about the parliament stability and prompted calls for a quick resolution.

In response to the deadlock, the Majority demanded a recall of Parliament, stressing the urgency of resuming legislative activities to address critical policies and programs that require immediate attention.

The reconvening of Parliament on November 7 aims to restore order, address unresolved issues, and ensure that vital legislative processes proceed without further delay.
