The Electoral Commission has disqualified Mrs. Joana Gyan from contesting the Amenfi Central parliamentary election as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate. This decision follows an interlocutory injunction issued by the Sekondi High Court.
The Deputy Chairman of the Commission, responsible for Operations, stated that the ruling was based on a court order dated May 31, 2024, in the case of Gyedu Frimpong & Others vs. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Commission (Suit No. E12/36/24).
The court’s order restrains the involved parties until the final determination of the matter, specifically:
a) The 1st Defendant/Respondent from presenting herself as the duly elected NDC parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency.
b) The 2nd and 3rd Defendants/Respondents, their agents, and officers from recognizing or affording any rights or privileges to the 1st Defendant/Respondent in relation to her candidacy.
As the court’s order has not been stayed or vacated, the Commission is obligated to enforce it. Consequently, Mrs. Gyan has been officially informed of her disqualification from standing as a candidate for the upcoming parliamentary election.
