The National Peace Council (NPC) has announced a comprehensive roadmap aimed at countering election violence and fostering political tolerance and nation-building in anticipation of the 2024 elections. As part of these efforts, the NPC is seeking discussions with the judiciary to potentially shorten the adjudication timeframe for parliamentary elections and has held several meetings with the Electoral Commission to address public concerns.
Chairman Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, represented by Executive Secretary George Amoh, outlined these initiatives during a collaborative dialogue in Accra with various stakeholders, including religious organizations, civil society groups, and representatives from the National House of Chiefs. The NPC, in partnership with the National Media Commission and with support from the Danish Embassy, has also established guidelines on hate speech and indecent expressions.
Additionally, the NPC has engaged with communities affected by violence in the 2020 elections, including Awutu-Senya and Techiman South, to gather insights that will inform strategies for the upcoming polls. The council is actively working to resolve approximately 703 cases related to tribal, chieftaincy, land, and resource conflicts, aiming to maintain peace and stability during the electoral process.
