SSNIT Pays GH¢400 Million Monthly to 300,000 Pensioners, Expands Coverage for Self-Employed

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has revealed that it currently disburses approximately GH¢400 million every month in pension benefits to over 300,000 pensioners, with the aim of reducing old-age poverty in Ghana.

Additionally, the Trust has enrolled about 128,000 self-employed individuals onto the scheme as part of efforts to expand its coverage and address poverty in retirement. The initiative is particularly focused on ensuring that those in the informal sector benefit from social security.

Kingsley Adjei-Manu, SSNIT’s General Manager of Operations, shared these details during an interview at the Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) awareness float in Koforidua on Thursday. The event, dubbed “Ops-A-Thon,” aimed to encourage more self-employed individuals to join the scheme.

“So far, we have enrolled 128,000 self-employed persons into the scheme, and we are still actively engaging them to increase enrollment,” Adjei-Manu said.

SSNIT’s efforts to extend its coverage to the self-employed are part of its broader mission to provide social security for all Ghanaians, ensuring financial protection in old age.
