Lawyers Petition CHRAJ Over Alleged Rights Violations by Ghana Police at StopGalamsey Protest

A group of lawyers has formally petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) against the Ghana Police Service, accusing them of violating the rights of demonstrators during the recent StopGalamsey protest. Organized by the Democracy Hub, the three-day protest aimed to urge the government to take immediate action against illegal mining, which the group claims is depleting the country’s natural resources and jeopardizing future generations.

Despite the protests, many participants were arrested, resulting in only two individuals attending the final day. Currently, 39 people have been remanded into police and prison custody, with more awaiting court appearances, including one of the group’s leaders, Oliver Barker-Vormawor.

In the petition, signed by lawyer Timothy Selikem Donkor, the legal team has called for CHRAJ to conduct an urgent investigation into the police’s alleged misconduct. The petition highlights issues such as unlawful arrests, detention without food, unprofessional conduct, and violations of the right to legal counsel. The lawyers have also requested prompt legal action to address these concerns and hold the involved police officers accountable.
