The Institute of Climate and Environmental Governance (ICEG) has revealed its plan to submit a petition to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) offices in Ghana, urging these organizations to pressure the Ghanaian government to take more decisive action against illegal mining, known as “galamsey.” ICEG believes that external influence could push the government to intensify its efforts in combating the environmental damage caused by galamsey, which poses significant threats to Ghana’s water bodies, forests, and farmlands.
In its statement issued on Tuesday, ICEG also announced a series of awareness campaigns in affected communities starting in early November. The organization voiced deep concerns over the pollution of major rivers such as the Pra, Daboase, and Ankobra, which have turned into toxic streams due to illegal mining activities.
ICEG proposed a comprehensive strategy to address the galamsey crisis, including a non-partisan approach, community involvement through awareness and monitoring programs, and stronger enforcement of regulatory frameworks. They also called for speeding up the licensing process for small-scale miners and promoting economic diversification to offer alternative livelihoods for those dependent on illegal mining.
Moreover, ICEG stressed the importance of collaboration with NGOs and the private sector to enhance environmental protection, alongside strong political will and anti-corruption measures to ensure accountability.
