Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, a former chairman of the electoral commission, believes the courts need to sort through election complaints and take action against those who file baseless lawsuits. Some election petitions, according to Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, are unlikely to succeed, and the courts ought to be able to identify which ones are unlikely to succeed.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 10, at the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference in Kumasi, the former chair of the Electoral Commission clarified that certain irrational election petitions could harm the credibility of the judiciary and the Commission.
Additionally, Dr. Afari-Gyan advised political parties taking part in the elections on December 7 to use caution when interacting with the “pink sheets” both during and following the voting. He underlined how important pink sheets are to the electoral process and asked parties to study them thoroughly before deciding to sue the Electoral Commission following the results.
Dr. Afari Gyan also cautioned the courts not to let politicians seize control of them. He said that the political elite is aware that seizing control of the judiciary is one of the most reliable strategies to seize political territory.
