Under the name Operation Recover All Loot Brigade (ORAL), a group of members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Wing has declared that on September 4, 2024, they will hold a demonstration at the Finance Ministry. The organisation is requesting answers as well as the return of money that was allegedly stolen in dubious deals.
Several examples of what ORAL refers to as opaque deals have been brought to light. These include the US$34.9 million Ambulance Spare Parts contract, the GRA-SML agreement, and expenses associated with the All-African Games. They specifically claim that there has been a lack of openness and possible cost inflation in the way the government has handled the national ambulance arrangement.
The group wants to make sure that public monies were spent properly by conducting a comprehensive inquiry into these transactions. The picketing at the Finance Ministry, according to Osman Ayariga, the convenor of ORAL, is a part of a larger series of protests scheduled at several public offices to demand prompt action on financial irregularities.
Ayariga underlined that the group’s objectives are to uphold the values of honesty and openness in the handling of public funds and to rebuild public trust in the financial management system. He also issued a warning, saying that unless their demands are fulfilled, ORAL will keep picketing and occupying government buildings they believe to be corrupt.
He stated, “As a result, on the 4th of September, the Oral Brigade will be assembling at the Ministry of Finance to voice our demands and ensure that our concerns are heard. Again, our purpose is to urge the Minister for Finance to take immediate action to investigate these matters thoroughly, halt any questionable payments, and recover funds where necessary.”
He continued “We believe that this picketing is vital to restore public confidence in our financial management system, to reinforce the principle that public resources must be managed with the highest levels of integrity and transparency. This is just the first and beginning of many planned protests by the National Conscious Oral Brigade aimed at demanding accountability in public financial management.”
