The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Samson Asaki Awingobit, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to disqualify the party from participating in the upcoming December 2024 presidential elections.
Bernard Mornah, the PNC’s presidential candidate, was one of 11 aspirants disqualified by the EC due to issues with their nomination forms. The disqualifications were attributed to incomplete supporter details and the use of registered voters from one district to endorse nominations in another, which violated electoral rules.
During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on October 1, where the EC discussed ongoing efforts to address discrepancies in the voters’ register, Mr. Awingobit expressed his dismay at the EC’s decision to disqualify the PNC’s candidate over what he described as “errors.”
He highlighted that mistakes are a part of any human endeavor, pointing out that just as the EC is rectifying errors in the voters’ register, political parties, as human institutions, should not be penalized for errors on their nomination forms.
Mr. Awingobit urged the EC to reconsider its stance and allow Bernard Mornah to remain in the race. He also commended the EC for broadcasting the IPAC meeting, a move that enhanced transparency, and praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for advocating this step.
In response to his disqualification, Bernard Mornah has taken legal action against the EC, arguing that his exclusion was unlawful and violated his rights. He is seeking a court injunction to compel the EC to reinstate him as a candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.
Similarly, the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has also filed a lawsuit against the EC after its presidential candidate was disqualified.
