As part of its Special Operations in Accra, the Police have announced the implementation of roadblocks and traffic diversions from September 21 to 24, 2024.
Key changes include a complete blockage of traffic from the Central Business District (CBD) to Independence Avenue at the AU Roundabout. Vehicles approaching the AU Roundabout will need to divert at the Castle Road, continuing to the Ridge Roundabout and onto Kanda Highway, eventually reaching Gold House Traffic Light (Kawukudi). Alternatively, drivers can turn from the AU Roundabout onto Castle Road, linking to Lokko Street, and then to Independence Avenue, proceeding to Labone and beyond.
Traffic from the AU Roundabout can also turn right towards Second Avenue (GIJ), leading to Ring Road Central, in front of the Police Headquarters, and then onto Dankwa Circle. From there, vehicles can take Cantonments Road towards Ghana International School and connect to Second Circular Road, proceeding to Giffard Road (El-Wak traffic light).
For those coming from the Madina direction, traffic will stop at the 37 Roundabout and be redirected via Obasanjo Highway to Gold House Traffic Light. Motorists will then turn onto Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway) and continue to Ridge Roundabout, linking back to Castle Road and the CBD.
Additionally, traffic from the 37 Roundabout will be directed to Giffard Road (Burma Camp Road) and connect to the Second Circular Road in front of Ghana International School, leading to Cantonments Road towards Dankwa Circle. An alternative route will take motorists through Giffard Road to Trade Fair, eventually joining Beach Road to the CBD.
The Presidential Drive behind TV3 will be closed at the Kanda Post Office Junction, with drivers advised to use Dr. Liman Highway for alternative routes. Furthermore, traffic will be redirected to Obasanjo Highway, Gold House Traffic Light, and Dr. Liman Highway.
A police statement confirmed that officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be stationed at strategic locations to assist motorists with the diversions.
“We urge pedestrians to avoid using the stretch from the AU Roundabout to 37 Roundabout. Alternative arrangements would be made for persons accessing the 37 Military Hospital, TV3 and individuals accessing their homes in the affected enclave during the period.
“We thank the motoring public for their understanding in this regard.”
