The National Peace Council is set to meet with representatives from all political parties and their presidential candidates today, November 28, to discuss a peace pact ahead of the December 7 elections.
The meeting, scheduled just nine days before the elections, aims to secure an agreement that commits candidates to fostering national unity and stability during the election period.
Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, expressed confidence in the process during an interview with Citi FM. He stated that the Council had received commitments from all political parties to attend and participate in the signing of the pact. The parties were also provided with a draft of the peace agreement for review, and Dr. Adu-Gyamfi noted that no adverse reactions had been received so far.
“We believe all the parties will be present. They have all committed to this, and we have sent them the pact for study and feedback. We have not had any negative responses,” he said. “At this stage, we are finalizing the logistics and arrangements for the signing ceremony.”
This confidence follows earlier opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which had raised concerns over the signing of the pact. The NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, had conditioned the party’s involvement on the resolution of violence from the 2020 elections, with perpetrators being held accountable. Nketia also requested the signatures of key government figures, including the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney-General.
It remains unclear whether the NDC’s concerns have been addressed and if they will proceed to sign the peace pact.
