“I always win things in second year” – Postecoglou

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou said “I always win things in my second year” after their 1-0 north London derby defeat by Arsenal.

Gabriel’s header from a corner secured a 1-0 victory for Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, propelling the Gunners into second place in the Premier League standings.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have struggled to find form, managing just one win in their first four league matches this season.

Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham’s and former Celtic coach, is now in his second season with the club, having guided them to a fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign. Despite high expectations, Spurs are still seeking consistency early in the current season.

After the disappointing loss, the Australian was asked about a pre-season interview where he said “usually in my second season I win things”.

He told Sky Sports: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed.

“I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

Postecoglou added he “absolutely” thinks Spurs can challenge for silverware this season, with their last trophy the 2008 League Cup – the only competition they have won in the 21st century.

Ange Postecoglou has a proven track record of success in his second season at various clubs. He led South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar to Australian titles and claimed the Japanese league with Yokohama F. Marinos, all in his second or second full season.

As Australia’s national team coach, Postecoglou guided the team to victory in the Asian Cup two years into his tenure. His time at Celtic was equally impressive, where he won back-to-back Scottish championships.

However, Postecoglou’s spells at smaller clubs like Panachaiki, Whittlesea Zebras, and Melbourne Victory were short-lived. He left Melbourne Victory after 18 months to take the Australia job, while his stints at the other two clubs also ended before completing two seasons, without securing any titles.

Former England defender Matt Upson, watching the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, said: “Tottenham are so susceptible defensively that it’s a real problem.

“They are not being clinical enough either which is what the real hammer blow is.

“If you’re going to be that offensive and that open and free, you’ve got to bang the ball in the back of the net and they’re not doing that.

“The pressure is going to start to build a bit on the manager.”
