FDA Warns Against Unregistered ‘Postinor 2’ with Pink Flower Label

The Upper East Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a warning regarding a specific type of Postinor 2 contraceptive with a pink flower label, stating that it is not registered with the Authority.  In a statement, Principal Regulatory Officer Mr. Abel Ndego explained, “Postinor 2 is a well-known drug used for pregnancy prevention, but this particular variant featuring the pink flower has not been approved by the FDA.”

He emphasized that the FDA cannot guarantee the safety or efficacy of this unregistered product, as it has not gone through the necessary regulatory processes. Mr. Ndego further revealed that quality monitoring of this Postinor 2 product indicated that the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient, which is crucial for preventing pregnancy, is not present in the required amounts. He cautioned during the Regional launch of the Goodlife Health Fair in Bolgatanga.

The three-day health fair, organized by the Regional Health Directorate in collaboration with the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC), aimed to promote health and wellness while encouraging positive health behaviors and improved access to essential healthcare services. The theme for the event was “Promoting good health through uptake of positive health behavior.”

Mr. Ndego urged the public to purchase pharmaceutical products only from accredited pharmacies and authorized over-the-counter outlets, ensuring that they buy registered products stored under proper conditions. During the fair, Mr. Ndego and FDA officials displayed unregulated pharmaceutical products to raise awareness and educate attendees on the dangers associated with them. He pointed out several dubious products on the market that falsely claim to cure various ailments, showcasing one such product adorned with inappropriate images.

The FDA continues to emphasize the importance of public awareness regarding unregulated products and the necessity of adhering to safety standards in pharmaceutical purchases.
