Government ban export of some key grains – “Premature”

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana has expressed its unhappiness with the recent decision of the government to ban export of some key grains which they have termed as premature. The government put in place an early ban on the exportation of maize, rice and soybean due to food shortage occasioned by droughts that has affected farming in eight regions.

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, revealed the decision during a press briefing on August on August 26 and defended the decision by stating that the move would help protect food stocks due to the current dry season.

Mr. Acheampong made this declaration during a press briefing on August 26 by saying ““With immediate effect, the government is placing a ban on the export of grains including maize, rice, and soybean until the situation normalizes.

However, Chief Executive Officer of the Peasant Farmers Association, Dr. Charles Nyaabah said the ban is premature and does not solve the root cause of the matter.
