President Akufo-Addo signs $1.7 billion water and sanitation sector agreement

In order to further the government’s commitment to enhancing public health, bolstering climate resilience, and guaranteeing that marginalized groups have access to WASH services, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inked a Presidential Compact on Water and Sanitation. The government would provide an estimated $1.7 billion a year to WASH programs until 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG 6) of the accord, which was signed on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.The money will guarantee that rural villages, schools, and medical facilities receive WASH services. In accordance with SDG 6.2, the compact would also create a National Sanitation Authority to aid in the government’s efforts to end open defecation by 2030. Building water and sanitation infrastructure and services that are climate resilient is now part of Ghana’s national climate plan.

By doing this, the nation will be prepared to handle the problems brought on by an increase in floods and droughts. The outcome of a protracted consultation process including academic institutions, local civil society organizations, development partners, and government agencies is the Compact. It was proclaimed as a pledge at the United Nations (UN) 2023 Water Conference, and Ghana decided to sign it, thus it has just been a year.

Supporters of the agreement, which falls under the Heads of State Initiatives, include UNICEF, the Sanitation and Water for All collaboration, IRC WASH, the Dutch government, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. These partners will provide technical know-how and coordinated lobbying in an advising role for the Compact’s implementation.

In order to emphasize the importance of the compact, President Akufo-Addo stated that without WASH services, sustainable development would not be possible in any sector. “The path we are taking is based on the essential reality that sustainable development will continue to be an unattainable goal in the absence of WASH services,” he stated.
