Cameroon’s President Paul Biya is preparing to participate in the country’s next presidential elections despite being 93 years old.
Biya, who has been in power since 1982, makes him Africa’s oldest president at the age of 91.He will vote to become an eighth term President in the 2026 Presidential Election.
The Foreign Press Association Africa’s founder, Kennedy Wandera reported this Thursday, August 22 through TheEastAfrican.
The report read: Cameroon’s next presidential election is expected to be in the year 2025, current president Paul Biya would be 93 years old. He has declared his interest to compete.“If he wins the election and completes the new seven-year mandate, Biya will be 100 years in 2032.
The opposition has been angered by Biya’s decision to shift Cameroon’s election by a year from 2025 to 2026 and to allow him to be a candidate despite his age.It also said that opposition politicians may not be allowed to contest thus making BiyaPreferred again to win and serve for 7 years.
Paul Biya has been the President of Cameroon since 1982 and therefore has been in power for 42 years. He too had also worked as Prime Minister for seven years from 1975 to 1982 before that.He delayed the scheduled Parliamentary and Municipal elections to 2026.
The reporter again said “Cameroon’s parliament last month approved Biya’s request to postpone parliamentary and Municipal elections until 2026 to allow some breathing space, claiming that the political calendar is crowded,”
