Ghana’s $450M Manganese Processing Plant to Kick Off as President Akufo-Addo Prepares to Cut Sod

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to break ground for the construction of a $450 million manganese processing plant at Nsuta in Ghana’s Western Region on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The announcement was made by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, during a visit to the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) on October 23, 2024.

Jinapor praised the management and staff of GMC for their contributions to the national economy and revealed that the construction of the refinery is a key part of the president’s vision to enhance value addition to Ghana’s natural resources. He highlighted the project’s significance, noting that it will shift the country’s approach from exporting raw manganese to processing it domestically. This value addition is expected to increase employment, boost revenue, and create linkages with downstream industries.

Jinapor stated that the refinery is in the final stages of approval for the Processing Plant, with parliamentary endorsement of the fiscal regime being the last hurdle. Once operational, the refinery will represent a major breakthrough for the country, as it aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of maximizing the benefits of natural resources through local processing.

Jurgen Eijgendaal, Managing Director of GMC, expressed gratitude to Jinapor for the support received under his leadership and affirmed the company’s readiness for the refinery project. The GMC plans to invest significantly in ensuring that all necessary resources are available for the successful operation of the plant.
