Akufo-Addo cuts sod for Accra-Tema Motorway expansion project

On Monday, August 26, President Akufo-Addo revealed expansion project to convert the motorway into a contemporary 10-lane highway during a sod-cutting event in Accra. After almost 60 years of operation, the Accra-Tema motorway—a vital conduit connecting Tema’s industrial region and Accra’s metropolitan center—is about to undergo a substantial renovation. By improving safety and reducing traffic congestion, this expansion will make the road more effective and completely accessible.

Three phases will be used to complete the 27.7-kilometer project. The George Walker Bush Highway is upgraded in phase two, the Nsawam Road is improved in phase three, and the motorway itself is rehabilitated in the first phase. The upgrade will also involve the installation of footbridges, toll plazas, and other infrastructure projects in addition to the reconstruction of crucial interchanges.

President Akufo-Addo emphasised that this large-scale initiative, carried out in conjunction with a fully Ghanaian-owned company through a public-private partnership, demonstrates the expanding capabilities of regional businesses. He underlined that the extension of the road is a step in the right direction towards Ghana being a modern, successful, and connected nation.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and the advancement of the country by urging all parties involved to guarantee the project is finished on time and within budget.
