The Alliance for Restoration of Civil Rights has condemned the recent arrests of protesters, including Oliver Barker-Vormawor, leader of the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamseyNow movements. The alliance criticized the Ghana Police Service, labeling their actions as an abuse of power that infringes on the democratic rights of Ghanaians to express their concerns.
In a press release dated September 24, the group stated that the actions of the police, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, represent not just a blatant misuse of authority but also an attack on the fundamental right of citizens to dissent and demand accountability from their leaders. They accused the police of prioritizing the arrest of peaceful protesters while neglecting serious constitutional violations.
The alliance emphasized that this selective enforcement of the law undermines justice and highlights the police’s failure to hold powerful individuals accountable. They have issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the immediate release of all protesters wrongfully detained during the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.
