Activists Plan Major Demonstration in Accra to Demand Release of Anti-Galamsey Protesters

Activists are organizing a demonstration in Accra from October 3 to 5, aimed at demanding the release of 53 anti-galamsey protesters who were arrested and detained by police a week ago.

The march will begin at Legon Okponglo and proceed to the Black Star Square. Organized under the slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” the protest also seeks to highlight the ongoing issue of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has significant environmental and social implications in Ghana.

Earlier this week, police approved the designated route for the march, which includes key locations such as Legon Stadium, Shiashie Traffic Light, Airport Traffic Light, Parliament, and Independence Square.

Mobilization efforts on social media have been robust, with thousands of participants expected to join the demonstration. The protesters aim to draw attention to both the plight of the detained activists and the broader fight against illegal mining activities across the country.
