The Electricity firm of Ghana (ECG), according to its managing director Samuel Dubik Mahama, suffered a ransomware attack that cost the firm between GH₵400 million and GH₵500 million. Dubik Mahama clarified the Vice President’s previous assertion in an interview and went into depth about the serious effects the malware had on ECG’s operations.
According to Mahama, the ransomware incident happened at a crucial time when the business was going through an operational turnaround that included system upgrades and fixes.
On May 9, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), revealed that certain ECG employees were undermining the government’s initiatives to digitize revenue collection. Dr. Bawumia revealed at the Annual General Meeting of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa that ransomware was introduced by certain ECG IT staff members, preventing the system from operating as intended.
