Real Madrid boycotts the Ballon d’Or event following Vinicius Jr.’s snub.

Real Madrid has reportedly chosen to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday night after learning that Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. will not be awarded the title. Despite being a strong contender following his standout season with Real Madrid, where he helped secure both Champions League and La Liga victories, Vinicius appears to have been overshadowed by Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Reports suggest Rodri, who played a vital role in Manchester City’s Premier League win and contributed to Spain’s Euro 2024 victory, is now the frontrunner for the award. The midfielder, currently sidelined with an injury, was seen arriving in Paris on crutches, with updates on social media hinting he’s the favorite to win. In response, Real Madrid has opted out of the event, with no representatives flying to Paris.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club has little interest in attending now that Vinicius seems unlikely to claim the award. In a show of solidarity, teammate Jude Bellingham is also reportedly skipping the event, along with Manager Carlo Ancelotti, who is a nominee for Coach of the Year. This year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony is notable for marking the first time since 2003 that neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo is on the shortlist, breaking their 13-time dominance over the award. Vinicius, who now wears Ronaldo’s iconic number seven jersey, has been seen as a rising successor to Messi, particularly after an exceptional season in which he took on a leading role at Real Madrid.
