2nd Edition of Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards Launched, Promoting Fair Recognition in the Genre

The 2nd edition of the Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards (GRDA) has officially been launched.  Aimed at recognizing the contributions of singers, producers, selectors, DJs, MCs, live bands, and performance artists, the GRDA is supported by a board of seven members with backgrounds in music and journalism.

The launch event took place on Thursday, October 3, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, sponsored by Nakanak Travels and Tours, and attended by media personalities and representatives from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), including Black Santino, Daddy Bosco, Chizzy Wailer, and King Lagazee.

Daniel Yeboah, CEO of ReggaeCourtEmpire and coordinator of the GRDA, emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the Reggae and Dancehall genres, which have been integral to Ghanaian music yet often overlooked. He asserted that it is time for these genres to take their rightful place alongside other celebrated musical forms in the country.

Unlike other award schemes that allow public voting, the GRDA relies solely on the academy and board members to determine the winners, a method designed to prevent vote buying and ensure fairness throughout the awards process.

Nominations for this year’s edition will be open from October 10 to November 10, with the nominees set to be announced on November 20. To build excitement, a Nominees Jam is scheduled for December 13. The inaugural edition of the Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards, held in December 2023 at La Shrine (Laboma), was won by Bongo Fari.
