The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the commencement of investigations into the rock blast accident at Buduburam, aiming to determine the cause of this tragic incident.
In collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ministry is assessing the number of casualties and injuries to ensure affected individuals receive appropriate care.
Preliminary reports indicate that four people are feared dead, with several others critically injured following the blast during a construction project on the Budumburam stretch of the Accra-Winneba highway. The rock blast, which lasted a few minutes, was conducted after halting traffic on the road.
Local residents reported that this is not the first instance of rock blasting in the area, noting that previous blasts have damaged roofing sheets of nearby houses, particularly around the Big Apple area. The injured have been transported to St. Gregory Hospital in Buduburam for treatment.
A statement from the Ministry expressed condolences to the families of those affected and wished a swift recovery to the injured. It emphasized that the contractor had successfully conducted 21 controlled blasts at the site prior to this incident, in partnership with NADMO and the Ghana Police Service.
The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to a thorough investigation and pledged to share the findings once available.
