The government scholarships program has drawn criticism from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), which claims that political connections are frequently used as a criterion for awarding scholarships rather than academic ability. The Association’s president, Yaw Acheampong Boafo, attacked the current system in a speech during the GBA’s 2024–2025 annual general assembly, claiming that it unfairly favours those who are already privileged and can afford to further their education on their own.
According to Mr. Boafo, scholarships ought to be given out on the basis of actual merit, financial necessity, and applicability to important fields of study and research. He called it “immoral and troubling” because government scholarships are awarded to people with political clout, denying opportunity to deserving but talented students. Reports of political cronyism, nepotism, and corruption in the distribution of government scholarships were also emphasised by the GBA president.
He stated that it is intolerable for one person to receive many scholarships while those in need of financial assistance are turned down. Furthermore, Mr. Boafo questioned the distribution of foreign exchange scholarships for courses that are offered at nearby universities. The government scholarship distribution system has to be reviewed, according to the GBA, to guarantee accountability, fairness, and transparency.
